Every day after coming from school, children in the slum area at the back of Rajya Siksha Kendra, in Area Hills, Bhopal, go to the “Bal Pustakalaya”, a library for reading books they like. Most of the children in the slum have developed a habit of reading. Moreover, the best part behind their habit and about the library is that the Bal Pustakalaya is run by a 9 years old, Muskaan Ahirwar.
At about 4pm in the evening, everyday, Muskaan sets up the library outside her house on the mat. The blue wall of her house is where she hangs all of her collection for the children to read it. Her love for reading started in December last year when she came first in a quiz competition held in her area. The officials gave her a set of 25 books as the prize and then what happened next became a source for the other children in the slum to read every day. “I now have a collection of 119 books. I love to share the books with my friends so that they can read them too. In fact, some of them even take books home and return them after reading. I have a good time in the library and my elder sister also helps me in maintaining the books”, says Muskaan with a smile.
The Bal Pustakalaya runs in association with the State Educational Board and currently provides with 119 books for children to read. Muskaan hopes to add more to this number as soon as possible.
Muskaan’s father is a carpenter by profession and mother is a housewife. They are more than happy to provide education to both their girls and hope that they keep on inspiring the future generation. “We had no idea that Muskaan will do something for the society at such a young age. In the society plagued with evils against girl child, we are proud of Muskaan and Maya. Both of our daughters are totally dedicated towards studies and are also bringing a positive change in the society”, says proud parents of Muskaan.
It is rightly said after all that age cannot be a determinant of how great and impactful your actions can be on the society.

Its heartwarming to know that a small deed of affection and encouragement can instill such a noble outlook in a preteen.
